From its beginnings, going all the way back to 1981, the Bonham Exchange has been around for quite some time. It’s a vital part of the LGBTQ+ community and has remained for more than 40 years. This year, the nightclub has earned the title of Best LGBTQ+ Spot for Entertainment and Leisure in San Antonio’s Readers’ Choice Awards.
The owner, Lee Haines, says a lot has changed since COVID. “I have a whole new appreciation for what we’re doing now. It’s more than just being part of the nightclub industry – it’s about being part of the gay community.”
After being shut down for 16 months, the Bonham Exchange has seen a surge of support from San Antonio after starting from what feels like scratch all over again. The city rallied behind the nightclub that has become an integral part of the city’s gay community to continue to provide a place of acceptance and simply having a great time.
Haines says, “It’s a place unlike anywhere else where you can be who you are and be accepted. Everyone will blend right in and fit as they are.”
If you’d like to visit, Fiesta will be the perfect time. The Bonham Exchange will be hosting the WEB after-party on April 1, complete with a shuttle going from the Aztec Theater to the nightclub, running until midnight. If you’re interested, the Bonham Exchange is also hosting the Chili Queen’s Chili Tasting and Tackiest Queen Contest on Sunday, April 3. It’s an official Fiesta event open to visitors 18+.
