China will use commerce and critical technology, rather than brute military force, to exert its power on the world stage into the 21st century, according to the US Studies Centre's Simon Jackson. The comments come as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Melbourne ahead of a Quad meeting with foreign ministers. In an interview with the Australian, Secretary Blinken warned that China will look to “dominate the world.” Mr Jackson told Sky News Australia that Mr Blinken is right, but that China may not look to use military force alone in its bid to solidify itself as a global power. “What we’ve got to think about is what power projection in the 21st century looks like, it won’t necessarily be something in battleship gray turning up onto your doorstep,” he said. “The levers in projecting state power into the middle of the 21st century will flow through the levers of commerce, will flow through critical technologies. “We ought to be concerned about territorial claims that China may or may not be making, but equally, and more importantly frankly, are those other avenues states project power.”
