Mahindra has announced that its upcoming Z101 SUV, which was earlier touted to be the next-gen Scorpio, will be christened the Mahindra Scorpio-N. The new Mahindra Scorpio-N will be revealed in full on June 27, with a price announcement likely to follow thereafter. This is contrary to earlier reports about a June 20 unveil, which would have coincided with the 20th anniversary of the original Scorpio's launch.

Mahindra Z101 SUV christened Scorpio-N Will sit on a ladder frame platform Expected to come with petrol and diesel engine options

Mahindra has been testing the new Scorpio-N for over two years now, with the car being spotted numerous times. It was recently revealed in full via leaked photos. The new Scorpio-N will be positioned above the current Scorpio – which will henceforth be called the Scorpio Classic – and slightly below the popular XUV700. Some variants of the new Scorpio-N could overlap higher trims of the current Scorpio and the lower to mid-variants of the XUV700.

With the new Scorpio-N, Mahindra will have have another ladder frame-based SUV in its line-up, which includes the Thar, the Scorpio, the Bolero and Bolero Neo.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: gets fresh yet familiar looks

Touted as a spiritual successor to the Scorpio, the new Scorpio-N gets a completely new design that unmistakably looks like a new-generation of the SUV. Though there are many design details on the new Scorpio-N that resemble the original SUV, it seems to have grown in terms of dimensions. For more details on the Scorpio-N's styling, you can refer to our story here.

The Scorpio-N's interior, as seen from earlier spy shots, will be a mix of plush materials and rugged bits. The SUV will have a large vertical touchscreen taking center stage on the dashboard, although it will not be dual-screen set-up as seen on the XUV700. Higher variants will also come with a digital instrument cluster. The switchgear will be shared with some of the newer Mahindra models like the Marazzo, XUV700 and the Thar.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: expected engine, gearbox, 4WD options

Under the hood, the new Scorpio-N is expected to be powered by the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines, which are already on duty on the XUV700 and Thar. The Scorpio’s power outputs are expected to be closer to the Thar’s than the XUV700, and the diesel engine will likely be available in two stages of tune. Gearbox options will include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic, with four-wheel drive and off-road driving modes likely to be offered on some variants.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: rivals

There will not be any direct rival to the Scorpio in our market, thanks to its ladder frame construction. We expect that customers interested in the Tata Harrier, MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and maybe even the XUV700, could consider the Scorpio-N as an alternative.
